I have been asked many times over the years, what to do when you hate your job? And although I can only give you my opinion and the solution that I found from my own point of view, let me tell you, I do understand your pain. Hating a job that you need to go to every day can be the worst feeling in the world. Of course what makes things even worse is the fact that you can’t quit because you relay on the money to look after your family and no doubt keep a roof over your head.
Why do so many people hate their jobs?
There are lots of reasons that you might hate your job. One of the biggest that I have come across is that people simply aren’t appreciated within the workplace any more. Do you feel frustrated? No career progression, low pay or are you simply treated badly? There are fewer jobs these days that offer the balance of being able to go to work and feel like you have done a good job whilst making a difference and getting that feeling of fulfillment. The feeling of belonging and of having a purpose within our job is really important, but it would seem that this is a very rare thing indeed!
There are a multitude of reasons why people hate their jobs and I would encourage you to use this page to post your stories and let others know why you hate your job so much! There is a comments section at the bottom of this article, feel free to express your feelings whilst not swearing or giving away any personal details, we don’t want your boss to find out what you’ve been saying!
What to do when you hate your job – My experience
In my own experience, I found like many people that I did my first job for quite a long time (10 years!) and I felt as though I was almost “locked in” after that length of time. It’s quite common to not know what you want to do with your career and as a result you simply look for any job that will pay the bills and keep you in a home.
I decided that I had to make a move into a different career after doing the same thing for ten years, and it wasn’t easy because I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life! I took the brave move of jumping from one thing that I had become bored of and ended up doing something totally different. In my case, I then found that the job that I went to wasn’t for me either and as a result I ended up jumping from one job to another, in an attempt to find something more suitable. Unfortunately, I never managed to find a job where I felt truly satisfied with my career choice. For that reason I started looking into ways of starting my own online businesses and concentrating on the things that really interested me as an individual.
Reasons For Hating Your Job:
Let me know in the comments section if you can relate to anything here:
- You hate your boss.
- Your boss appears to hate you!
- Your job simply sucks!
- Your job is boring! (Yawn!)
- You hate your surroundings at work.
- Nobody appreciates your efforts within the workplace.
- You have poor or no facilities in the workplace.
- You have no chance to progress within your job.
- You get not sense of fulfillment from your job.
- You are tired of the monotony of going to work.
- The people that you work with are total morons!
Can you relate to any of these? Yes, it’s a fact that jobs are not created with the intention of making us happy as employees most of the time. It’s obviously a fact that the aim of most jobs is to make a business money by performing your daily duties. However what a lot of businesses fail to realize is the fact that it generally takes a lot of workers to make a successful business and whilst people are unhappy within their job, they will never do their best for the company.
What To Do When You Hate Your Job – Taking Action
So you want to know what to do when you hate your job? What steps should you take to make your life better? Let’s look at some solutions and then I will tell you how I changed my life for the better and how you can do the same.
You have a few basic choices in my opinion. The first choice that you need to make is simply do you stay or do you leave your job? You can start taking action to change things, but only when you have truly decided which direction to go in. Staying in the job that you hate is safe, it pays the bills and like we have already said it no doubt keeps you in a home. But can you really go through life wishing that things were better and never actually doing anything about it? Changing things for the better involves either changing the way that you look at your job or making the decision to find a new job.
Let’s look at those options…
- Play it safe. Stick with the job that you hate. It pays my bills. (low risk, low return)
- Rethink why you hate your job and take steps to alter this. (Low risk, medium return)
- Find a new job or create your own path. (Higher risk, maximum return)
Play it safe, stay miserable
We all know what you can expect from keeping everything the same! If you don’t change anything in your life and continue doing the same old thing, day in, day out, then don’t expect anything to miraculously happen by itself. Winning the lottery is highly unlikely so if you want change, you better be prepared to make a change! Baring that in mind, let’s take a look at our first option. Is it possible to rethink why you hate your job so much and make changes to rectify the way that you think?
Think about this:
By saying that you hate your job might in itself make you feel less worth. By admitting that you hate your job is almost like saying that you didn’t successfully find the right job. In declaring that you really dislike your job is the first step to less productivity within the workplace. Adapting a positive attitude if at all possible can help you to move forward in leaps and bounds, although I am all too aware that this is not always possible!
Generally speaking, Job haters have lots of company in the work place as there tends to be a lot of people that hate their job. Think about it, do you really hate your job or are you being influenced by the opinions of others?
What are the reasons that you hate your job? Realistically, are there any steps that you could take within the workplace that could make your life better? Do you hate the fact that you are poorly paid for instance? Can you take steps to improve your position and increase your pay?
Sometimes it simply takes a little positive attitude to make things seem a little better and this is a low risk strategy that could make things seem a little better in the short term.
What if you are out of options? What if you really NEED to change!
Option 3 is slightly higher risk in my opinion but is a risk that sometimes needs to be taken in order to progress. If you really can’t find any other way to beat the frustration of how you feel about your job, then eventually you need to come up with a plan. Fortunately for me, I already had part of a plan, I just needed some direction.
If you really can’t see no other way to move forward then you seriously need to do some searching within yourself, in order to discover what would make you happy. For myself, I always knew that I would like to start my own internet based, home business. It’s quite amazing how it can make you feel to just start building something that you love doing rather than hating. For me, starting my own online business wasn’t something that just happened over night. It was a process of learning and building over time. But that process was enough to make the day to day hatred of my day job seem more bearable.
I am now part of an internet business community that finds lots of people that start their own online businesses for many reasons. Either they are not very well paid, they hate their job or they simply want to create a better lifestyle for themselves.
What to do when you hate your job – My advice
If you really hate your job as so many people do, then my advice would be to firstly try to alter the way that you look at your job. A positive attitude can go a long way! Don’t just quit your job that will only leave you in a worse position. Search within yourself and ask yourself what it is that you think would really make you happy? Look for the one thing in life that you are really passionate about. Can you turn your passion into a new job or even your own business?
What to do when you hate your job – Create Your Own Job
I have never been able to find the perfect job! I left school not really knowing what job I wanted to do. I jumped from one thing to another without ever finding any real direction or fulfillment. That was until I realized that my best bet would be to start my own home based business, talking about things that I was interested in.
There are many benefits to starting your own business and it can be very rewarding. If you really hate your job and you simply can’t find a solution then perhaps the best solution would be to create your own job. Could you start your own business? Perhaps you have an interest or passion that could be turned into an online business?
