In this quick tutorial we are going to learn how to add a new category or tag to your WordPress blog. Tags and Categories help to separate your content into groups of similar posts or pages.
Putting your content into groups will help your blog readers to navigate to their areas of interest. Categorizing and optimizing your content also helps Google, Bing and other search engines to determine what your site is all about.
When Do We Use Tags And Categories?
For example you might have a health and fitness website where you talk about healthy living. In this example you might have a category for “healthy eating” and another one for “exercise techniques”.
Within those categories you can organize things even more with the help of “tags”. Tags work in the same way as categories but help to organize things on a deeper level.
So in our example of a health and fitness site. We might have our “Healthy Eating” category with lots of posts talking about that subject. But we can also add tags to further organize the posts into areas such as “Family Meal Recipes”, “Healthy Breakfasts”, etc…

How To Add A Category To Your WordPress Post
Lets take a look at how we can add a category to one of our WordPress posts.
There are a couple of ways to add Categories and tags to your posts. I’ll first of all show you how to do it from the blog post itself.
Whilst in any blog post you can click the “cog wheel” icon as shown below to bring up post options. From there, simply select the “post” tab (see below).
As you scroll down you will see the option to add a new category. Simply click this option and write the name of your category in the highlighted box as shown in the image below. Click the add new category button to add the category to your list.
You can add as many categories as you wish. Once you have added your categories, you can then simply select the ones that apply to the post in question.
Once you have selected one or more of the categories that apply to your blog post, simply press the update button.
How To Add A New Category Or Tag To Your WordPress Blog Via Quick Edit
Another quick way to add categories and tags is to go through the “quick edit” section of WordPress. From the main WordPress dashboard, select all posts. From here you will see the “quick edit” underneath each of your posts.
The quick edit section allows you to tick the categories that you require for that particular post. In this section you can also add tags to your posts.
Adding a tag to your post is done in the same way as categories. Via the quick edit section simply type each tag and then press the update button.
You can also add multiple tags by separating them with a comma. See the example above.
Again, once you have finished making your changes, don’t forget to hit the update button!
