If you have been interested in internet marketing for any length of time, then you may have considered getting yourself qualified with some certificates in online marketing. You may think that by having something on paper that it will increase your chances of getting better or more work in the field. But did you know that a lot of what you see out there on the internet in online universities and even sites that specialize in online marketing are teaching methods that are actually out of date.
The internet and everything contained within it is changing at an amazing rate. This causes quite a problem for the people that create online marketing training. Often a system or method that an individual may teach online, might be totally outdated within a few months.
When using the internet we rely on the likes of Google, Bing and Yahoo to deliver accurate and relevant search results when we make a search online. As the amount of users increases, along with the volume of information stored on the internet, Google changes too. Search engine giant, Google are the current leaders in providing information over the internet and in order to meet the demands of the users, Google constantly change their algorithm.
Why Internet Marketing Never Stays The Same
Going back just a few years, getting a website ranked highly within the search engines was a completely different story to what it is now. Going back to around 2010, the internet was full of online training that taught people how to build websites in a certain way and get them ranked highly. There were quite a few techniques that were taught back then, which are now considered to be “black hat” methods. However, the unfortunate thing is that a lot of these methods are still being rehashed and taught all over again today.
A few years ago it was possible to build quite a small website, with the aim of promoting absolutely anything and have it compete with some of the biggest names in the industry. At the time there were two main strategies that were used to gain fast and high ranks in Google. Firstly, one technique would involve getting the keyword density just right within your page. And secondly you would need to work “off-site” building links or “backlinks” that would point to the page in question. The idea was to submit articles and create other small sites that would contain links pointing to the page that was going to make you money. Several years ago, Google’s algorithm was programmed to see a backlink as a kind of vote for the webpage that it was pointing to. It didn’t matter where the link came from, in general the more links that pointed to a page, the higher it would climb up the search ranks.
This was of course brilliant news for the online marketer, who could at the time rank for any keyword or phrase that they wanted. Highly ranked pages meant high pay-outs for those people in the know. As a result, lots of people saw a further way to make more money by teaching others how to produce these results. And these methods were passed from person to person.
Google’s Answer To Poor Quality Websites
There was a major impact on the online marketing world when Google realized that there was a need to eliminate such practices. The result was several search engine algorithm changes that altered the way that Google viewed the content that we produce. Google had found a way to stop internet marketers from gaining top positions within the search results so easily by evolving the formula used to calculate the value and relevance of a webpage. As a result, during the introduction of such updates as Google Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird, many websites went out of business over night. To this day and no doubt for a very long time into the future, Google continues to evolve with the goal of proving us with quality results.
What Is The Best Online Course For Learning Internet Marketing?
In my opinion certificates in online marketing are fairly useless due to the reason that there is no single online course that could possibly teach you everything that you needed to know. Why? Because the methods that you learn and use in your online marketing campaigns can change very quickly. Sure a certificate in online marketing may give you a start, it might even get you on the ladder to success. But even if you manage to find a course that is right up to date, your information might not be relevant for the long term.
I have been working online for many years now and I can tell you that there is a lot of out dated material online. Even some of the courses that appear to be of the highest quality can turn out to be nothing more than rehashed rubbish, taught by somebody that has never done online marketing in their life.
