Hello and welcome to the Make Money Online Zone website. Today we are starting an experiment with a website that has been around for quite a few years now. The site is called Adf.ly and offers two different services. First of all you can make money with Adfly by using their link shortening service. Or you can pay for traffic which can be directed to your website or offers. We are testing the second service, starting today with two paid campaigns. So if you want to know how good Adf.ly traffic really is, then stay tuned! Does Adfly really deliver human visitors? Does Adfly traffic convert? Well, we’re about to find out…
The Adf.ly Dashboard – Starting our campaign
It has to be said that Adfly have done a very good job of making it easy to buy traffic from these guys. The account set up process is straight forward with nothing complicated at all. The Adfly dashboard gives you several options were you can pre-pay for your advertising, using what they call the wallet. The dashboard also gives you easy access to support, which is always a good sign and of course we have the create campaign button. All very straight forward so far…
Adfly Traffic Prices and Types Of Advertising Available
Adfly supply various kinds of traffic at several different rates. You can choose from Interstitial Advertising, Leaderboard Banner Advertising or Pop Ad Advertising. I couldn’t find anywhere on the website that explained if pop ad’s were pop up or pop under advertising. But for this experiment I opted for the Interstitial Advertising as I would hope that this could potentially convert more easily.
Adfly Traffic Prices
Nobody can say that Adfly traffic is expensive. This is one thing that concerns me about the traffic from Adf.ly, it’s cheap! Normally cheap traffic equals poor quality traffic. For that reason I’m not going to go crazy with the campaigns that I set up, but I still want enough traffic to give what should be a fair account. Traffic can be purchased from Adfly as cheaply as $0.40 per 1000 visitors! As you can see from the image below, the cheapest Adfly traffic is “proxy traffic”. This cheap traffic also comes from all over the world, so there is no telling who will see your promotion. In my opinion, purchasing low quality traffic like Worldwide or Proxy traffic from Adfly would be a bad idea. For this experiment I’m going to opt for the most expensive Unites States traffic.
Setting Up A Campaign For Adfly Traffic
The process for setting up a campaign is very simple and straight forward. You can pre-pay your account using the “Wallet” feature as mentioned earlier or pay after you have set up your adverts. Creating an ad with Adf.ly was actually very easy. You simply enter the amount of traffic that you need and then enter the details of where you want the traffic to be directed. Adf.ly actually have some really great features for targeting both desktop and mobile devices.
Adf.ly state that you must comply with their rules before a webpage can be submitted. On checking the Adfly rules, everything is fairly standard. You are not allowed to submit adult content, no frame breaking script, no pop ups or exit messages are allowed either. Adfly don’t accept anything that is related to illegal practices such as piracy and apparently all ads are checked manually.
The Adfly Traffic Experiment
In order to give Adfly traffic a good chance I chose to target two pages that had proved popular in the past. One page on the MMOZ website which you can see here about creating a successful home business. And I set up another campaign aimed directly at Wealthy Affiliates free membership. Both of these pages provide genuine free information that many people have found helpful. The problem with Adfly traffic is that you simply can’t target people by their interests. The Adfly traffic that we will get is targeted only by country and by device.
For this experiment I ordered 7000 visitors from the United States and Canada only. The total cost for this Adfly traffic was $30 (including VAT).
After submitting your ad details you are advised that the acceptance process can take up to 72 hours. In the image below you can see a breakdown of the Adfly traffic that I purchased.
Here Comes The Traffic!
Well I wasn’t quite expecting this, the approval process is supposed to take around 72 hours, my ad was approved within 2 hours. One very concerning thing that I immediately notice is that the traffic is being sent very quickly!
On checking my stats it would seem that over 1000 visitors have been sent within around 15 minutes!
I know the Adfly network is pretty big, but the rate at which this traffic has been delivered does make me suspicious.
Adfly Traffic Experiment – 10 Minutes later!
10 minutes after the initial burst of over 1000 visitors and Adfly shows no sign of slowing down!
Another 10 minutes in…
After a further 10 minutes I checked the stats again to find that all 2000 United States visitors had been delivered. As you can see from the status in the image below it now reads as finished. This would be amazing if the traffic from Adfly was good and converted well. All 2000 United States visitors were delivered within half an hour of the campaign being accepted. The traffic from Canada is much slower in comparison, but oddly both of my campaigns are getting around the same amount of traffic.
Later on that day…
It would seem that Adf.ly can supply United States traffic incredibly quickly. The Canadian traffic was much slower as I mentioned above. But never the less, these campaigns had completely finished within 4 hours of setting them up! Impressive, speedy delivery of traffic is one thing but what results did we get from these campaigns? And can we confirm that this is definitely human traffic and not just automated “bot” traffic?
Our Results Using Adfly Traffic
After running these two campaigns with Adf.ly I can confirm that the traffic sent does appear to be from real internet users and not bot traffic. However, due to the limitations on being able to really target specific interests or keywords with Adfly, the results are always going to be a bit hit and miss. Out of the 7022 visitors that were delivered to my pages, we only managed to get 8 conversions. It’s quite possible that those 8 conversions may well make a profit against our $30 cost to run this experiment. But is Adfly traffic really worth it?
Is Adfly Traffic Worth The Money Or Should You Spend It Elsewhere?
You appear to get quite a lot for your money with Adfly traffic. The problem is, that traffic is not targeted enough to ever covert really well. In my experiment I chose top level traffic, focused on free offers that normally convert pretty well. Yet this traffic source really didn’t perform as well as I would have hoped. I’m sure with a lot of experimentation, better results could possibly be achieved. The question is, do you really want to spend a lot of time and money experimenting with traffic that simply isn’t targeted to your niche or offers? Would $30 have been better spent on a Pay Per Click campaign on Google or Bing? I think so!
Free Traffic Using Proven SEO Methods
Whilst there is no doubt that Adf.ly are offering a decent online service, there are better ways of driving traffic. PPC with Google and Bing may well be extremely targeted due to the fact that you can directly target keywords and interests, but it can also be very expensive. Free search engine traffic is often the very best traffic that you can get. However, free traffic can be very difficult to achieve in large numbers, especially if you don’t have the right information.
Over the years search engine optimization has changed quite a lot and getting free targeted traffic isn’t so easy if you are using out dated methods. If you would like to learn more, I recommend you take a look at this guide to learn how to generate free targeted traffic and leads on Wealthy Affiliate. You will also find a lot more free and up to date information on the subject of search engine optimization too.
